   About Te Kauri-Waikūkū Trust

Te Kauri-Waikūkū Trust (TKWT) was established in 2004 to teach environmental education to school children and carry out ecological restoration at Te Kauri Park, a 1100 hectare reserve near Kawhia (an hour from Hamilton).

The motto of the Project is “Learning through healing the forest”. Ecological restoration, species recovery and environmental education objectives are interwoven throughout the Project. Through the Ministry of Education’s ‘Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom’ (LEOTC) contract, we teach over 900 school children every year.

Te Kauri-Waikuku Trust is made up of representatives from:
• The Hamilton Junior Naturalist Club (HJNC)
• The Department of Conservation (DOC)
• Ngati Hikairo
• The Enviroschools Foundation.

The concept for the Project was launched by the Hamilton Junior Naturalist Club in 2003. The HJNC has a proud 45-year history of environmental education and has played an important role in establishing and expanding Te Kauri Park as a public reserve. The Club owns and operates the 95-bed Te Kauri Lodge and museum (located adjacent to the reserve), in addition to running its own programmes, (visit www.junats.org.nz  for more information).

We are funded by the Ministry of Education, Lotteries, Environment Waikato and DoC.
